BREAKS

BREAKS

A bone fracture or fracture is an associated mechanical injury characterized by soft tissue damage, disruption of bone or cartilage continuity. Fractures are caused by an external force, strong enough to overcome the level of physiological elasticity of bone or cartilage and lead to disruption of bone flow.

Fractures can be:
Closed fracture:

⦁ Impossibility to initiate injured extermitity,
⦁ Swelling at the fracture site is not always present.
⦁ Deformity of extremity is not always present., If there is a sure sign of a fracture.

Open break:

⦁ Parts of the bone protrude through the skin outside (fracture and wound), pain, inability to move, deformity of the extremity.

Immobilization:
Immobilization is a procedure by which an injured part of the body is put at rest. The purpose of immobilization is to prevent aggravation of the injury and reduce pain until the arrival of the medical team.

Immobilization rule:

⦁ Bone: broken bone, two adjacent healthy joints, two thirds of the bone adjacent to the joints
⦁ Joint: an injured joint and two adjacent healthy bones

Immobilizers:
⦁ Handy tools: planks, triangular scarf, clothes, stick, skis and other items that can be found on the spot.

⦁ Standard means: pneumatic splints, vacuum splints, vacuum mattress, cramer rails, Thomas splint, spinal board, KED system, cervical collar with head blocks.

Immobilization position:
⦁ Do not correct deformity
⦁ Adhere to the broken part
⦁ immobilize in found position or natural position:
- leg - outstretched
- arm - at right angles to the body
- sprains and fractures in the joint - in the found position
